DON'T Buy Scrivener Until You Read This Entire Post! 'How much does Scrivener cost?” Once new authors read for the hundredth time, from every author in the blog-o-sphere, that Scrivener is the greatest thing to happen to self published author's since Amazon. Scrivener is book writing software developed more than a dozen years ago by an aspiring author frustrated with trying to keep his notes organized. The result was a word-processing tool similar to Microsoft Word with the organization capabilities of a tool like Evernote. How Much Does Scrivener Cost? It varies depending on your system. If you don't have a licence, Scrivener will run in trial mode. The trial is exactly the same as the full version but will stop working after 30 days of use. (If you use it every day, it lasts 30 days; if you use it only two days a week, it lasts fifteen weeks.) The terms of the trial are only applicable to the macOS and Windows versions.

Once new authors read for the hundredth time, from every author in the blog-o-sphere, that Scrivener is the greatest thing to happen to self published author's since Amazon and the laptop, that's the very first question they ask me.

I understand the impulse—I'm a penny-pinching indie author miser too—but 'how much Scrivener costs' is the wrong question.

Even at full retail, Scrivener's well worth the 'price'...

So, how much is Scrivener?

What most new authors mean when they ask how much Scrivener costs is, 'What's the Scrivener price?”

It's only natural. As self-published authors, we're bombarded by micro costs on what feels like a daily basis. Between my email marketing costs, my web server costs, the price to do a book promotion, buying plugins to make my WordPress site less vulnerable to those pesky hackers, it seems like I'm being 'priced' to death.

But here's some good news fellow indies, Scrivener's price is the least expensive, most valuable piece of software you'll wonder how you ever managed without.

Here's the breakdown of Scrivener price by version:

  • The MAC version of Scrivener costs (at full retail) at the time of this post, roughly $45 - That's it! Trust me even at full retail price, it's a bargain. Pray that Keith and friends over at Literature and Latte NEVER come to their senses and raise the price!
  • T he WINDOWS version of Scrivener costs (at full retail) at the time of this post, roughly $40. There are slightly fewer bells and whistles on the Windows version to justify the just a tad cheaper Scrivener price.

But wait! That doesn't mean you can't save a few bucks on Scrivener, because aren't we all continual 'students' in this business?

  • The MAC 'EDUCATION' version of Scrivener costs (at full retail) at the time of this post, roughly $38.25 - Not bad, but hang on until the end, because we can do better.
  • The WINDOWS 'EDUCATION' version of Scrivener costs (at full retail) at the time of this post, roughly $35 - That's a pretty good price for a piece of software that will save you literally hundreds of hours over your lifetime as an author.
Remember, don't buy it until you get to the end...

Okay, okay, I get it—I'm a little heavy-handedly alluding to a nuance here in the difference between Scrivener's price and Scrivener's cost, so...

How much does Scrivener cost vs its price?

Admittedly, Scrivener is relatively inexpensive at under $50 for a writing platform that allows you to do everything from outlining, to mind mapping, organizing, detailing, editing, and also allows you to compile manuscripts suited for every major platform available to self-published authors. But price is not cost.

The learning curve...

If I'm being honest with you, Scrivener's main cost—what you will exchange for it in value—is the learning curve—your time. You've probably heard about that too.

It's not as bad as you might think.

Imagine if you knew nothing about Excel or MS Word. The learning curve to get up and running proficiently on those would, by today's over-bloated software standards, seem daunting. So as with any new software, Scrivener will cost you mainly in time to get up to speed and using it well.

Don't get me wrong, you can easily open docs in the Scrivener Binder and start typing, but to create outlines, chapters, and entire novels or non-fiction drafts will take some getting used to and exploring the interface. Which is super powerful I might add. And that's a good thing.

Thankfully for those of you just starting out, there are training courses available that you can take to defer some of that Scrivener cost in time.

Learn Scrivener Fast is one such course. Take a look. It's pretty good.

Ready to defer some of that Scrivener cost—sorry, price?

Full disclosure—I regularly maintain a Scrivener Coupon Discount Code post on this site. It contains coupons ranging from 20-25% off of Scrivener and sometimes more.

Scrivener (/ˈskrɪvənər/) is a word-processing program and outliner designed for authors.[5] Scrivener provides a management system for documents, notes and metadata. This allows the user to organize notes, concepts, research, and whole documents for easy access and reference (documents including rich text, images, PDF, audio, video, web pages, etc.). Scrivener offers templates for screenplays, fiction, and non-fictionmanuscripts. After writing a text, the user may export it for final formatting to a standard word processor, screenwriting software, desktop publishing software, or TeX.

Features[edit]

Features include a corkboard, the ability to rearrange files by dragging-and-dropping virtual index cards on the corkboard, an outliner, a split screen mode that enables users to edit several documents at once, a full-screen mode, the ability to export text into multiple document formats (including popular e-book formats like EPUB and Mobipocket for Kindle, and markup languages such as Fountain, HTML, and MultiMarkdown), the ability to assign multiple keywords (and other metadata) to parts of a text and to sort the parts by keyword (such as characters, locations, themes, narrative lines, etc.), hyperlinks between parts of a text, and 'snapshots' (the ability to save a copy of a particular document prior to any drastic changes).

Scrivener allows photos, URLs, and multiple other file formats, to be dragged into its interface as well. Because of its breadth of interfaces and features, it has positioned itself not only as a word processor, but as a project management tool for writers, and includes many user-interface features that resemble Xcode, Apple's integrated development environment (IDE). One computer programmer has called Scrivener 'an IDE for writing'.[6]

Keith Blount created, and continues to maintain, the program as a tool to help him write the 'big novel', allowing him to keep track of ideas and research.[7][8] It is built mostly on libraries and features of Mac OS X from version 10.4 onward. In 2011, a Windows version of the software was released, written and maintained by Lee Powell.[9]

Scrivener

iOS[edit]

Scrivener for iOS was launched July 20, 2016.[10]

Linux[edit]

There is no official release for Linux, but there is a public beta version[4] which has been abandoned[11] but still is available to use.[12]

Macintosh[edit]

The latest version of Scrivener for Mac is version 3.1.5, and requires macOS Sierra or newer.[1] Scrivener can be obtained from the Mac App Store, but since the Mac App Store application is only usable on OS X 10.6.6 and later, users of earlier versions of OS X must buy it directly from the developer's website instead of the Mac App Store.[13]

The company also makes Scrivener 2.5 available for earlier version of Mac OS X, but claims it is the final version of the software that was built to run on both PowerPC and Intel systems running Mac OS X 10.4 through 10.8. This version is available on the direct sale page in the sidebar titled 'Mac OS X 10.4–8 and PowerPC'.[13]

In addition to the Scrivener version 2 releases, the direct download page provides access to the obsolete version 1.54, but licenses are no longer available for purchase. The 1.54 release is compatible with Mac OS X versions 10.4 through 10.6.[13]

Windows[edit]
